Margin vs. markup

Margin: profit is a percentage of the selling price. With cost 100 and 20% margin, the price is 125 (profit 25 = 20% of 125).

Markup: profit is a percentage of cost. With cost 100 and 20% markup, the price is 120 (profit 20 = 20% of 100).

The same percentage gives different prices depending on the method. Made-up example numbers.

Indicative calculation. Excludes taxes and fees and has no tax or legal validity.

How to read the example

  • Extra expenses cover the whole quote. The 20 USD is added once, not per unit. If your expense is per unit, multiply it by the quantity before entering it.

  • The discount comes off the price and lowers the margin. Before the discount, profit is 55 on a price of 275: a 20% margin. Afterwards it is 27.50 on 247.50, which is 11.11%.

  • Margin and markup give different numbers. That same 55 profit is a 25% markup on the 220 cost (55 ÷ 220), even though the margin is 20%. Choose carefully which one you enter.

  • The result includes no taxes or fees. If they apply, add them separately and review the total before sending.

How to work out a price

  1. Enter the unit cost and extra expenses for the whole quote, then the number of units or services.
  2. Choose margin if profit should be a share of the selling price. Choose markup if you want to add a percentage to cost.
  3. Apply a discount if needed. Review the breakdown, then print the quote or save it as a PDF in your browser. The tool's public share link does not include your inputs.

Margin and markup differ

With a cost of 100 and no other expenses, a 20% markup gives 120. To get a 20% margin on the selling price, the price is 125. A later discount reduces the realized margin, which the breakdown shows.
