Worked example: one image, four ratios
Starting from the same source photo, here is how the output size changes with each ratio. It helps you anticipate how much of the original framing is kept.
Starting point
- Source image
- 2400 × 1600 px (3:2, landscape)
- Crop
- Centered
Resulting size by ratio
| Ratio | Result | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 (square) | 1600 × 1600 px | Full height is kept; the sides are cropped |
| 4:5 (portrait) | 1280 × 1600 px | Full height is kept; more width is cropped |
| 9:16 (story) | 900 × 1600 px | Full height is kept; a narrow strip remains |
| 16:9 (landscape) | 2400 × 1350 px | Full width is kept; top and bottom are cropped |
What these numbers mean
These are example outputs at source resolution. Actual output depends on your image and export settings. The preset ratios do not upscale: a small source gives a small result.
Cropping is not compression. Cropping changes the framing and the pixel count. Compression (quality and format) changes file weight for the same framing; lower quality gives a smaller file but may show a loss of detail.
JPEG does not support transparency. If your PNG has a transparent background and you export as JPEG, the transparency is lost. To keep it, export as PNG or WebP.
The safe area is a preview aid only. It is approximate and is not part of the downloaded file. Check the result on the platform where you will publish it.
How to prepare an image
- Choose a JPEG, PNG or WebP file up to 25 MB. It opens locally.
- Pick a ratio: square (1:1), portrait (4:5), story (9:16) or landscape (16:9). Check that the main subject stays in frame.
- Turn on the safe area guide if platform controls may cover the edges. Adjust format and quality, then download. Under Last export, compare the actual bytes: converting or enlarging an image can also make the file bigger.
A practical example
For a portrait product post, try 4:5. If your graphic has text near the bottom, check the safe area before exporting. The preview is a guide; verify the current requirements of your destination platform.
Privacy and limits
The image is processed on your device; MaatWork does not receive the file. Final size varies with image content and format. A transparent PNG can lose transparency when exported as JPEG. Safe areas are approximate because platform interfaces change.
